First, we will create a gap between the window frame and the stucco for installation of foam backer rod as a bond breaker, and on top of that goes the silicone sealants, either DOW 795 in a color match or Sonneborn NP-1 paintable. Here is a picture of the gap we cut, click on the picture for better resolution-

Then we install the backer rod and sealant. In this case, the homeowner asked for a band around the window. Here is the final product, before and after.

Looks great, eh? Note as well below the window that the top of the band slopes away from the window. This helps as well to keep water away from the wood.

Advice-

The best thing you can do for your windows and doors- any wood on a home really- is keep it well painted and insure that your sealants are in good shape. There should be no cracks in the sealants, and the edges of the sealant should firmly adhere to the surface. Georgia Premier Exteriors uses Dow 795 silicone sealants where the color can be matched or coordinated with the surfaces. Dow 795 will not keep paint, and in the applications were the sealants need to be painted to match, we use Sonneborn NP1 paintable polyurethane sealants. Both sealants remain flexible for many years in extreme temperatures. These sealants are a bit more expensive, but in the long run will save you on rework and repairs because other sealants simply don't hold up the way these do. These sealants are used commercially in places that are meant not to be visited again for many, many years. Don't cut corners here or you will be reworking this in a couple of years, and possibly dealing with repairs from it's failure.
